How is CELPIP scored?

Updated October 2026. A plain-English guide to CELPIP levels, CLB and what examiners look for.

Each skill gets its own level

The CELPIP-General test has four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You get a separate CELPIP level for each part, from M (minimal) and 1 up to 12. There is no single "overall" score that immigration uses. Each skill counts on its own.

CELPIP levels match CLB one-to-one

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) measures English with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). For CELPIP the conversion is simple: a CELPIP 9 in a skill equals CLB 9 in that skill, a CELPIP 10 equals CLB 10, and so on.

  • CELPIP 7 / CLB 7: "adequate proficiency". The usual minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.
  • CELPIP 9 / CLB 9: "effective proficiency". This is where Express Entry language points rise sharply.
  • CELPIP 10 / CLB 10: "highly effective proficiency". The top language band for CRS points.

How Listening and Reading are scored

Listening and Reading are multiple-choice and marked by computer. Your number of correct answers is converted to a CELPIP level. Some questions may be unscored trial items, so every question deserves your best effort.

How Writing and Speaking are scored

Trained raters score your responses against published performance standards. Writing is judged on four areas:

  • Content and coherence: clear, well-organised ideas with good supporting detail.
  • Vocabulary: a wide range of precise, natural words.
  • Readability: grammar, sentence variety, paragraphs and connecting words.
  • Task fulfillment: answering every part of the task in the right tone and length.

Speaking uses the same areas, except that listenability (pronunciation, rhythm and grammar control) replaces readability.

When results arrive and how long they last

Scores appear in your CELPIP account, usually within 2–4 business days. You download the official PDF score report from there. For Express Entry, your results must be less than two years old on the day you apply. You can ask for a re-evaluation of one or more parts within six months of your test date.

Practise with scored mock tests

On CLB Target, every practice test gives you an estimated CELPIP level, and Writing and Speaking get instant AI feedback on the same four areas. Start with a full mock exam, or try the free first test in Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking.
